Why I am an Atheist

To begin, I was born going to church, my involvement in the religious aspect lasting from 1982 to about early 2013. The journey I started on in becoming an atheist began when I was involved with the Jehovah’s Witnesses and was watching Youtube videos based on people having initially been involved with JW’s and weren’t anymore. Watching these videos made me wonder how the common reference to the JW’s as being a cult was true. At the time, I could not really see it. With fear as a common tactic described as the consensus of being part of a cult, ALL of Christianity along with Islam would be a cult. Pretty sure that most religions would fit into this category as well.

Having associated with the JW’s for approximately seven years, I started becoming disillusioned with the whole thing, especially after I started listening to atheist podcasts such as Dogma Debate, The Thinking Atheist, and The Atheist Experience. After having changed my religious affiliation on Facebook from Christian to Atheist, I started studying with some Mormons, just to see what it was that they had to offer. This was due to a curiosity that I have had since at least high school. Eye opening was the information that they provided along with info that I had found on the internet, particularly the sites that held information pointing to the contradictions of Mormonism.

After a couple times of studying with the Mormon missionaries, I was baptized. Funny thing was, I believed none of what they believed. The whole thing was just a bit silly to me, especially when they were saying the things that I knew was absolute rubbish. Their learning material was, to me, something that seemed to be made for a child-like mindset.

As for the JW’s, it soon came to my attention, apart from their continuous attempts at false prophecy as much of Christianity does, was that the date 1914 was false. 1914 is based off of the destruction of Jerusalem that happened in 597. According to Jehovah’s Witnesses, the date is 607 B.C.E. as according to most of Christianity. Evidence proves 597 was the true date as proven by science.

Concerning general Christianity, the conflict of “inspiration” concerning verses of the bible has been a constant eye opening experience. Since the bible says that “god” is not the author of confusion, this conflict shouldn’t even exist. This has been a single brick in the whole foundation that brought me to being an atheist.

Then there’s the whole concept of The Great Flood. First, the flood waters. Too much salt water would kill fresh water fish. Too much fresh water would kill salt water life. Second, the vegetation. As long as the flood had lasted, the vegetation would have been killed. As a Christian friend mentioned, six months is the least amount of time for vegetation to grow back. Who can wait six months to eat again? How about the herbivores? Third, animal life on the boat itself.

At 8.7 million animals having been cataloged, 6.5 million are land animals. Following what is given towards the end of Genesis chapter 6 and use the two by two, then there’d be 13 million animals on the boat. Who has the time to gather 13 million animals from all over the world along with the food required for them to eat in 7 days according to Genesis 7?

When I had seen the video by The Thinking Atheist on the Flood story, these were some of the points brought up and truly made me think. Along with this that the carnivores would also have needed something eat so the possibility of no more herbivores would also have been good.

Lastly, with the constant expansion of the universe, there is continually less and less where “god” can hide. If biblical creation had been true, the universe would be largely smaller then what it is now. Rocks would also be younger than they are now.

As an atheist having grown up in the church and Christianity in general, I have come to my freedom through the benefit of the internet. The internet has benefited me with great freedom from providing the information necessary to break free from religion. For this I am grateful and will use it as a continual source for my growth as an individual and to help those around me.

Undecided

As I have been looking around for a place to live around San Diego, I have to the realization that I would have to roommate with someone when I first get there seeing as how my current pay would be insufficient for the rent that is even just a minimum around the area that I am looking at moving to. Still looking at moving down there in the time frame decided. Would have to apply for unemployment once I get there if I am unable to find a job within 3 months upon arrival.

On a separate note, during my look into my family history, I have found that I have a Cherokee ancestor. When I am able to get down to who, I would then be able to find my tribal number. That’s what I have been told. The process will reveal how far I will be able to take it. It has been starting to look like it is about four or five generations back. If able to retrieve and qualify for a tribal number, than I will be able to focus more sufficiently I suppose.

Granted, during the time I have remaining here in Vincennes, IN I will be able to continue to search. Just hoping that I will be able to find out more info before I go to where the river takes me.

Have been thinking about going about getting me camping gear in that I may be able to make more of a journey down. Dunham’s Sports is the closest to an REI here but I have not been inside as of yet. Want to in order to see what it is that I am able to purchase from there. Though I am really not sure what kind of outdoor supply chain may exist down in the San Diego area.

Quote of The Day by Dianne Feinstein

Male or Female: This has got to grab hold of 'your dignity' one way or another and realize it is being shaken by a Devil.

Quote of the day by Dianne Feinstein..........

Dianne Feinstein: "All vets are mentally ill in some way and government should prevent them from owning firearms."

Yep, - she really said it on Thursday in a meeting in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee...

and the quote below from the LA Times is priceless. Sometimes even the L.A. Times gets it right.
Kurt Nimmo: "Senator Feinstein insults all U.S. Veterans as she flays about in a vain attempt to save her anti-firearms bill."
Quote of the Day from the Los Angeles Times:

"Frankly, I don't know what it is about California , but we seem to have a strange urge to elect

really obnoxious women to high office.
I'm not bragging, you understand, but no other state, including Maine , even comes close.

When it comes to sending left-wing dingbats to Washington , we're Number One.

There's no getting around the fact that the last time anyone saw the likes of Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein,

Maxine Waters, and Nancy Pelosi,

they were stirring a cauldron when the curtain went up on 'Macbeth'.
The four of them are like jackasses who happen to possess the gift of blab.

You don't know if you should condemn them for their stupidity or simply marvel at their ability to form words."
Columnist Burt Prelutsky,
Los  Angeles Times

Be sure to forward this to all of the “mentally ill” vets you know.

San Diego

Having come to the conclusion that San Diego will be my goal for living in the future, I realize that I have given myself time to prepare for such a trip, or journey, depending on the outlook. Moving forward, planning what needs to take place will be easy but somewhat challenging, though starting will be the hardest. A foundation must be laid of course in order to have something to build upon. What will be my cornerstone?

Though California has a lot to offer as a state, San Diego as a city and a county has it’s own stuff to offer within itself. Being a city alone with various cultures, ideas, and many “types” among many other things, that’s what it gives as a city among an ocean of gems.

I am thinking of starting at mission beach, though downtown San Diego would have a better option of resource. A beach doesn’t really seem like a good spot to really start a life, but with the intention of starting things off right, a sight of a beginning where I was first introduced to San Diego years before I went to boot camp for the Marine Corps.

Which brings to the second destination, the airport. The one thing that I could see from the window of the barracks that my platoon shared with many others. Many times, looking out the window, I would think how easy it would be to just go down the stairs, jump the fence, and just sneak on somehow on an aircraft heading anywhere. Getting onto the aircraft wasn’t important, being it through the wheel well or somehow something similar. But, in one way, I was looking at my future because the MOS I had chosen was Aviation Electronics. The style of aircraft wasn’t on any fixed wing but on a helicopter by Sikorsky called an CH-53D, a helicopter that has been decommissioned for a while now.

Planning with a good foundation would be good but without a cornerstone, it would be pointless. So in starting with this, I am sure it will be a good year till I make it to my destination.

The Three Places

The three places that have been on my mind lately have been Miami, Phoenix, and San Diego. Though in my mind I enjoy winter and what comes with it, the physical attraction to a warm place has started to become something unavoidable. At some point in the future, I would like to move to one of the formerly mentioned places.

What the attraction is, that I have been to two ( San Diego and Phoenix) but have always wanted to go to one (Miami) to experience what it had to offer like the other two. In San Diego, the attraction that draws me is Mission Beach, though that may be because it is the few things that stays constant of what I remember about San Diego. As for Phoenix, just the thought of exploring more of what it is apart from the airport and hotels, getting to know what it is on a deeper level. Miami holds the most to what explorative nature there is to see. As never having been there but hearing about it has made it a bit bigger than what it may actually be.

Though I know that all things, places, and people hold a good and bad side, the calling to see what it is to develop my own opinion gets greater and greater. It may be at least a year before I am even able to consider such a move, the challenge has been set in my mind. Calling from the shadows, whispers to me in my dreams. Futures aren’t set in stone and shift like the sand.

The trip to any three would be great to take video of, with the bus rides and the waiting in bus terminals. Greyhound has become my best option at this point. Only question to be asked, what should I do once I get down there? A job at any three would be the first choice. After that, what ever offers itself to be explored.

CROW KILLS

Researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority found over 200 dead crows near greater Boston recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts.

However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colors of paints appeared on the bird's beaks and claws. By analyzing these paint residues it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car.

MTA then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills.

The Ornithological Behaviorist very quickly concluded the cause: when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger. They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout "Cah", not a single one could shout "Truck." Absolutely amazing!

Boatlift On 9/11

Boatlift on 9/11...Unbelievable

Narrated by Tom Hanks

We certainly were busy watching the news right after 9/11, but never saw this......BOATLIFT OF 9/11. You know, in the 11 years since this happened, this is the first time I've ever seen this...I don't even remember seeing/hearing about this evacuation on the news! And the fact it was all done in 9 hours...500,000 people! This is a video well worth watching. The guy at the end (same guy who is at the beginning) has some great words to live by for all of us. Watch till the end, you won't regret it.

The Goldberg Brothers - The Inventors of the Automobile Air Conditioner

Here's a little fact for automotive buffs or just to dazzle your friends.

The four
Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram and Max, invented
and developed the first automobile air-conditioner. On July 17, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97 degrees.

The four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter.

Henry was curious and invited them into his office.

They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car. They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off immediately.

The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent.

The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label, 'The Goldberg Air-Conditioner', on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed.

Now old man Ford was more than just a little anti-Semitic, and there was no way he was going to put the Goldberg's name on two million Fords.

They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown.

And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners show --
Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max -- on the controls.

The Marine's Prayer

The Marine's Prayer

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(excerpt from Warrior Culture of the U.S. Marines, copyright 2001 Marion F. Sturkey)

Regardless of the situation, the Marine Corps has an answer for almost everything.

Contact with The Deity is serious business. It is also an excellent idea for Warriors who are expected to put their lives on the line against an assortment of foes. For U.S. Marines of any faith who may desire guidance when contacting their Maker, the Marine Corps has a ready aid, The Marine's Prayer
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails,
make me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will.
Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty
in purpose and deed and helping me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines,
my loved ones, and Thee without shame or fear. Protect my family.

Give me the will to do the work of a Marine and to
accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm.
Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance.
Keep me loyal and faithful to my superiors and to
the duties my Country and the Marine Corps have entrusted to me.
Help me to wear my uniform with dignity,
and let it remind me daily of the traditions which I must uphold.

If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith;
if I am tempted, make me strong to resist;
if I should miss the mark, give me courage to try again.

Guide me with the light of truth and grant me wisdom
by which I may understand the answer to my prayer.

Oklahoma update

Date: May 21, 2013

This info came from a brother who is also an amateur radio operator (ham) in Texas. He operates an emergency net on the amateur frequencies daily.

Brothers and Sisters,

I have heard from three brothers and sisters in the Oklahoma City area

in the past 15 minutes.

Unofficial preliminary information is that no brothers or sisters were

killed. However, we still don't have all the information from the

elementary school in Moore where they are still searching and don't know

if any JW children attended there.

Reportedly, four brothers lost their homes. Not sure whether that was

in Shawnee, Moore, or a combination.

One brother who lives 15 miles west of Moore said it is far different

from watching the news. This time it's real, and driving by the area is

surreal. This time it's neighbors and real people who could be you.

Another brother who lives northwest of Oklahoma City confirmed there

were four homes lost. The KH in Moore is south of the tornado's path and

is intact. One family lived in the neighborhood that was destroyed. They

barely got out in time. Some of our Vietnamese brothers survived in a

shelter. One family of four witnesses lived in the area hardest hit and

lost everything, but they were in a shelter and are safe.

I will pass on to you any further information I receive. Please let me

know if you hear any factual info.

Warm regards,

Charlie

10 (a) 4 (b) 2 (c) 3 (d) 5 (e) 6 (f) 1

Now add up the total number of point s.

OVER 60 POINTS: Others see you as someone they should "handle with care." You're seen as vain, self-centered, and extremely dominant. Others may admire you, wishing they could be more like you, but don't always trust you, hesitating to become too deeply involved with you.

51 TO 60 POINTS: Others see you as an exciting, highly volatile, rather impulsive personality, a natural leader, who's quick to make decisions, though not always the right one s. They see you as bold and adventuresome, someone who will try anything once, someone who takes chances and enjoys an adventure. They enjoy being in your company because of the excitement you radiate.

41 TO 50 POINTS: Others see you as fresh, lively, charming, amusing, practical, and always interesting, someone who's constantly in the center of attention, but sufficiently well-balanced not to let it go to their head. They also see you as kind, considerate, and understanding, someone who'll always cheer them up and help them out.

31 TO 40 POINTS: Others see you as sensible, cautious, careful & practical. They see you as clever, gifted, or talented, but modest. Not a person who makes friends too quickly or easily, but someone who's extremely loyal to friends you do make and who expects the same loyalty in return. Those who really get to know you, realize it takes a lot to shake your trust in your friends, but equally that it takes you a long time to get over if that trust is ever broken.

21 TO 30 POINTS: Your friends see you as painstaking and fussy. They see you as very cautious, extremely careful, a slow and steady plodder. It would really surprise them if you ever did something impulsively or on the spur of the moment, expecting you to examine everything carefully from every angle and then, usually decide against it. They think this reaction is caused partly by your careful nature.

UNDER 21 POINTS: People think you are shy, nervous, and indecisive, someone who needs looking after, who always wants someone else to make the decisions and who doesn't want to get involved with anyone or anything! They see you as a worrier who always sees problems that don't exist. Some people think you're boring. Only those who know you well, know that you aren't.

Now forward this to others, and put your score in the subject box of your email, like this:

You'll Love this Brain Transplant

In the hospital where a family member lay gravely ill, the relatives gathered in the waiting room. Finally, the doctor came in looking tired and somber.

"I'm afraid I'm the bearer of bad news," he said as he surveyed the worried faces. "The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant. It's an experimental procedure, very risky, but it is the only hope.. Insurance will cover the procedure, but you will have to pay for the BRAIN."

The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news. After a time, someone asked, "How much will a brain cost?"

The doctor quickly responded, "$5,000 for a Democrat's brain; $200 for a Republican's brain."

The moment turned awkward. Some of the Democrats actually had to try not to smile, avoiding eye contact with the Republicans. A man unable to control his curiosity, finally blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask, "Why is the Democrat's brain so much more than a Republican's brain?"

The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and explained to the entire group, "It's just standard pricing procedure. We have to price the Republicans' brains a lot lower because they're used."

SEND THIS TO A SMART Republican WHO NEEDS A LAUGH, AND TO ANY Democrat WHOM YOU THINK CAN HANDLE IT!

"Any man who thinks he can be happy and prosperous by letting the Government take care of him; better take a closer look at the American Indian."

Man Who Was A Catholic Priest - What An Experience

This is an experience related at an assembly:

Valdir was born in Portugal. When he was younger his family moved to
Brazil. He was 12 years old, when his father died, and a year later his
mother remarried. Valdir did not accept that someone would take the place of
his father. Conflicts arose between Valdir, his stepfather, and his mother.
After a discussion that irritated the nerves, he decided to leave home. A
short time later, the rest of the family decided to return to Portugal.
Valdir was only 13 years old when he separated from the family.
He decided to become a priest. He began his studies in a seminary and
graduated in theology and became a priest. Due to his position, they sent
him to the Vatican in Rome to work and to continue his studies there. During
that time he was sent to 80 different countries and learned to read and
write 6 different languages. He worked with Paul IV and John Paul II. Also,
he took their classes, and knew them in private. He also had lots of contact
with the Pope at present, Benedict XVI. He was highly respected in the
church and was sent to different countries to investigate and solve problems
within the church.
He has also composed religious music. At least two of these compositions
are well known all over the world and famous Brazilian priests sing these.
At least 2 million copies have been sold.
In the mid-90's, he was sent to Sao Paulo in Brazil. A short time later
he was going to be consecrated (named as bishop). But in that time he
started to feel disappointed by the abuse of power and the partiality that
existed within the church; for that reason he decided to demit his position.
A year later, he received a message from the Vatican where he was informed
that he should become bishop so that he could advance to later become
archbishop and cardinal. But, he rejected it again. He was also informed
that a priest with such a high education as his could not stay in a large
city without having to take on more responsibility. He had to move to a
smaller city. He chose a city that was in a very Catholic region close to
the city of Tatui. He had the desire to do social work. (This area belongs
to the West Tatui
congregation.)
In the 80's Valdir was sent by the church for a year to the United
States. His mission was to study the more influential churches in that
country. It was then that for the first time he received information about
the Witnesses. Even though the truths he learned did not please him, he was
convinced that only the Jehovah's Witnesses fulfilled the mandate of
preaching the gospel publicly and from house to house, even though people
made fun of, repudiated, and rejected them ferociously.
After some time, he received a visit from a brother that was preaching
from house to house. The brother left him a pair of magazines. After having
read them, Valdir used them as material for his next sermon and cited the
source material. Some of those present reacted negatively, and the church's
headquarters in Sao Paulo was informed. Valdir received a reprimand but was
not intimidated, and continued to have the brothers visit him. He also
continued to read and use the magazines in his sermons.
A pioneer brother that had gone to MTS started to study with Valdir. Even
though he experienced a lot of opposition (verbal, and psychological, and
was attacked several times) he continued to study.
Valdir solicited a discharge in the church and started to frequent the
meetings. His prior friends came to be his enemies and they tried to cause
him damage. To hinder his search for a job, they started to lie about him.
They even tried to convince a person in the congregation to accuse him of
committing a crime. This person negated, and told Valdir what they were
doing.
As an unbaptized publisher, he had an average of 70 hours monthly in the
field service. In July of 2005 he expressed his desire to be baptized, but
he was advised to wait some time. In January of 2006 he was approved for
baptism at the assembly that would be held in February in the Tel assembly
locale. When he was approved for baptism (a month before the baptism) he
felt that he needed to reconcile with his family, for which he had not seen
in 31 years. He thought that a true Christian had to preach the truth to his
family.
During all the years he had contact with the consulate to renew his
permit of residency in Brazil, there was always a greeting from his family
and a telephone number so he could get in contact with them, but Valdir
never called them. Now he wanted to call his mother. But when he heard her
voice, he failed to speak and just cried and had to hang up. After a few
minutes he called her again.

This next dialogue is what happened next:
Mother: How are you, my son?
Valdir: Thanks to Jehovah, I'm doing good now.
Mother: What name have you used? You speak of Jehovah?
Valdir: Yes. I am no longer priest in the Catholic church. I am a Jehovah's
Witnesses, and I have a lot to tell you.
Mother: My son. All of the family, including me, your stepfather, and your
siblings are Jehovah's Witnesses for years now. It is because of that that
we tried to reestablish contact with you.

For a few minutes, they couldn't speak, just cry. Valdir was informed
that one of his brothers serves as an elder. His stepfather, his mother,
and one of his brothers is baptized. He still hasn't decided if he will stay
in Brazil, or move back to Portugal.

This experience was related by Georg and Mona Green, missionaries in Tel,
Brazil. They are in the same congregation as Valdir.

Who Says Men Can't Remember Dates‏

Men do remember

A woman awakes during the night to find that her husband is not in bed. She puts on her robe and goes downstairs to look for him. She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a hot cup of coffee in front of him. He appears to be in deep thought, just staring at the wall She watches as he wipes a tear from his eye and takes a sip of his coffee.
'What's the matter, dear?' she whispers as she steps into the room, 'Why are you down here at this time of night?

The husband looks up from his coffee, 'It's the 20th Anniversary of the day we met.'
She can't believe he has remembered and starts to tear up.
The husband continues, 'Do you remember 20 years ago when we started dating? I was 18 and you were only 16,' he says solemnly.

Once again, the wife is touched to tears thinking that her husband is so caring and sensitive. 'Yes, I do' she replies.
The husband pauses. The words were not coming easily. 'Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car?'
'Yes, I remember' said the wife, lowering herself into a chair beside him.
The husband continued. 'Do you remember when he shoved the shotgun in my face and said, 'Either you marry my daughter or I will send you to prison for 20 years?'
'I remember that, too' she replied softly.
He wiped another tear from his cheek and said 'I would have gotten out today.
