Scripture

"And it came to pass that we did go up to battle against the Lamanites; and I, even I, in my old age, did go up to battle against the Lamanites. And it came to pass that we did go up in the strength of the Lord to battle. Now, the Lamanites knew nothing concerning the Lord, nor the strength of the Lord, therefore they depended upon their own strength. Yet they were a strong people, as to the strength of men."
 — Mosiah 10:10–11 (See also verses 1–15 for the full context of Zeniff’s record)

Reflection

In this chapter of Mosiah, King Zeniff recounts twenty-two years of peace, industry, and diligent preparation. His people built homes, tilled the earth, spun fine linen, and prospered. Yet, peace was eventually disrupted when a new king arose among the Lamanites, stirring them up to wrath.
When the conflict arrived, Zeniff did two critical things: he prepared strategically (setting guards, sending spies, organizing by age), but more importantly, he went up to battle in the strength of the Lord.
Latter-day Saint commentary often highlights the stark contrast drawn in verses 11 through 15. The Lamanites possessed immense physical strength and martial capability, but they "knew nothing concerning the Lord." Instead, they relied entirely upon their own natural capacities, fueled by generational grievances, false traditions, and a deep-seated culture of blame regarding Nephi and the wilderness journey.
In our own lives, trials and spiritual adversaries rarely announce themselves with trumpets. They often manifest as the "natural man," reliance on secular or worldly armaments alone, or carrying the heavy burden of inherited bitterness and resentment. King Zeniff’s record reminds us that physical preparation, hard work, and vigilance are necessary, but human strength alone is ultimately insufficient against the trials of mortality. True endurance requires anchoring our trust in divine power.

Practical Lesson

Human preparation must be coupled with divine reliance.
Zeniff’s people built weapons, planted crops, and organized ranks, but Zeniff explicitly noted that their ultimate victory rested on going into battle in the strength of the Lord. Similarly, President Russell M. Nelson has frequently taught that as we build spiritual momentum and rely on God, we can withstand whatever opposition comes our way. Practical diligence—prayer, scripture study, and ethical living—prepares our minds, but the Lord’s grace provides the decisive strength to overcome.

Personal Challenge

Identify one area in your life where you have been relying solely on your own "strength, as to the strength of men"—whether trying to manage stress, break a bad habit, or solve a conflict through sheer willpower. Today, deliberately invite the Lord into that specific struggle by pairing your practical efforts with a focused, written prayer for divine guidance and relief.

Prayer

Our Father in Heaven,
We come before Thee with grateful hearts, acknowledging that Thou art the source of all our strength and peace. Help us to be diligent in preparing for the duties and trials of our daily lives, just as Zeniff’s people guarded their homes and fields. But save us from the trap of relying solely on our own wisdom or physical capacity.
When we face opposition, misunderstanding, or the weight of our own trials, soften our hearts against bitterness and turn our faces toward Thee. Grant us the courage to walk in Thy strength and the faith to trust in Thy deliverance.
In the sacred name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Devotional: Trusting God's Timing Over Human Zeal

Date: August 15, 2026

Scripture
> "Nevertheless, being a man that took more than I ought, seeing that I was overzealous to inherit the land of our fathers... And we were smitten with famine and sore afflictions; for we were slow to remember the Lord our God." — Mosiah 9:1–2
Reflection
Zeniff’s story begins with an admirable desire: he wanted to reclaim the ancestral land of the Nephites. It was a heritage tied to their history, their identity, and a place of deep emotional significance. Yet, Zeniff candidly confesses that he was "overzealous." He acted out of human impatience and his own strength, bypassing divine counsel and separating himself from his brethren. The result? Instead of immediate blessing, his group encountered famine, affliction, and a long, difficult wilderness wandering because they were "slow to remember the Lord our God."
How often do we fall into the exact same pattern? We identify a good goal—perhaps a career milestone, a family aspiration, or a personal project—and our enthusiasm takes the wheel. We rush forward on the momentum of our own energy, forgetting to invite God into the blueprint. When we run ahead of the Lord's timing, even righteous desires can become self-inflicted spiritual traps. Zeniff’s account reminds us that how we pursue our goals matters just as much to God as the righteousness of the goals themselves.
Practical Lesson
Good intentions and human passion are not substitutes for divine direction. When we rely solely on the "arm of flesh"—our own intellect, timeline, and resources—we leave ourselves spiritually vulnerable and open to the subtle deceptions of the world. True security and lasting success come only when our personal ambitions are fully submitted to the Lord’s timing and guidance.
Personal Challenge
Take a close look at a current goal, project, or major decision in your life. Pause today to evaluate your motivation: Are you driving this forward out of impatience and self-will, or have you genuinely sought and waited upon the Lord's direction? Surrender the timeline of that goal to Him in prayer today.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before Thee with grateful hearts, acknowledging that Thou art the source of all wisdom and strength. Forgive us for the times we run ahead of Thee, driven by our own overzealous ambitions and impatience. Help us to slow down, to remember Thee in all our daily pursuits, and to align our desires with Thy holy will. When we face decisions or trials, grant us the discernment to trust Thy timing rather than our own strength. In the sacred name of Jesus Christ, amen.
Daily Action Step
Before making any significant decision or starting a major task today, pause for a one-minute silent prayer. Explicitly invite the Lord to direct your steps, curb any rushed impulses, and grant you peace in His timing.
